The JVP says the present regime is fully accountable for the actions by the Central Bank as it has made the bank independent from the state and parliament on IMF recommendations.

CBSL governor Nandalal Weerasinghe is not responsible for what is happening in the bank because it is no secret as to who has made it accountable only to global banks, said the party’s politburo member Bimal Rathnayake.

A parliamentary committee on the economic crisis has decided to summon the CBSL’s monetary board to inquire about a 70 per cent pay hike for the bank’s employees.

Committee chairman Gamini Waleboda said the increase was against the law, as a provision to raise salaries without parliamentary approval had been removed at the passage of the Central Bank Act.
