The human remains found from a mass grave at Kokkutuduvai in Mullaitivu are believed to have been haphazardly buried during the 1994-96 period, according to expert belief.
A committee led by forensic archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva submitted its findings in that regard to the Mullaitivu district court yesterday (22).
Skeletal remains belonging to 40 persons have so far been exhumed from the site first found in 29 June 2023.
Mullaitivu JMO Kanagasabapathy Vasudeva told journalists that the bodies could have been buried hurriedly there without performing religious rites.
Most of the bodies are of women, and it is believed they were LTTE female cadres.
A decision on further excavations is expected at the next court hearing on 04 March, said lawyer V.K. Niranjan, who represents families of missing persons.
Cause of death and other key factors are yet to be determined, he said.
