Public security minister Tiran Alles says his choice for the position of police chief is incumbent acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon.
Deshabandu’s role in the acting capacity ends on 26 February.
Speaking to the media at the President’s Media Centre yesterday (22), Alles responded to questions raised on a permanent IGP.
He said the government side finds no issue in that regard, but it was not so for the Constitutional Council.
“If everybody allows the ongoing programme to continue, Deshabandu Tennakoon should be appointed the IGP,” he stressed.
FR petition against Deshabandu
Tennakoon’s appointment has been challenged in the Supreme Court in a fundamental rights petition filed by Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.
He was appointed as the acting IGP on 29 November, 2023, after C.D. Wickremaratne retired as the IGP after completing four service extensions.
