Sri Lanka will again fall into bankruptcy by 2028 with the state unable to repay loans owing to very high electricity bills and fuel prices,

warns leader of the United Republic Front Patali Champika Ranawaka.

An average family of four has lost Rs. 800,000 of earnings and suffers under intense pressure due to a contracting economy, he said.

Ranawaka told the Public Utilities Commission that electricity tariffs should be decided while giving due consideration to the public, the failure of which will unavoidably draw their anger.

Very high electricity costs have caused misery for industries which are turning to competitive countries that offer lower rates, he said.

State revenue has risen by Rs. 2,000 billion only due to the taxes imposed on the public, added Ranawaka.
