The Cabinet of Ministers has given their approval to transform the debt-ridden Rupavahini and Broadcasting Corporations into a single state company.
This is pursuant to a recommendation given by the committee for reforming state enterprises.
Rupavahini is Rs. 1,300 million in debt, and the state broadcasting institution owes Rs. 800 million.
With a monthly electricity bill of Rs. 60 million, the two institutions need another Rs. 100 million to pay salaries.
The two institutions have a combined workforce of around 1,100.
