Just as Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) marks its 42nd anniversary today (14), its workers allege corruption and mismanagement have left the state-run television channel with more than Rs. three billion in debt.
Even unable to settle its bills, the institution got its electricity supply disconnected yesterday.
Chairman Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe came under strong opposition this morning when he attempted to address the employees, who accuse him of protecting the frauds and corrupt.
An employee told ‘The Leader’ on condition of anonymity that they planned to stage a street drama in the style of a hartal in a show of their protest.
After coming to know about that, the chairman came to them and tried to appease them.
“We opposed him, saying that channels should not be opened to promote minister Bandula and that no one gives us any money. Now, a planned web radio has been suspended,” said the employee.
The suspension of ‘Ru Radio’ comes at a time when the institution is unable even to pay salaries, employees pointed out.
The SLRC has failed to pay its VAT dues for several years due to mismanagement by chairman Samarasinghe and directors, they said.
EPF and ETF contributions have not been deposited either for several months now, while more than 40 retirees are awaiting to receive their gratuity payments.
It is reported that the chairman is planning to resign and leave the country.
