The Media Organizations Collective has written to the speaker against an attempt to repress the media by using parliamentary powers and privileges against journalists.
The collective of six media organizations says it denounces all petty attempts to block the people’s right to know the truth.
Their letter points to a request by MP D. Weerasinghe, who had referred to a newspaper report on the online safety act, to take it up at the parliamentary privileges committee.
Expressing surprise over the speaker’s decision to refer the matter to the said committee, they said they were keeping a watch on government attempts to use outdated laws to repress the media.
