The United Republic Party says it held talks with the IUSF on 30 January with regard to socioeconomic issues of university students.

As a result of the economic crisis, funding has been curtailed to restrict space for physical development of universities, said party leader Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Also, brain drain among university teachers has had an adverse impact on academic activities, while insufficient salaries have caused concern among all staffs, he said.

IUSF convener Madhushan Chandrajith said state repression and repressive acts of law also came under discussion.

Chandrajith highlighted the responsibility of political parties to raise a voice on their behalf, both in and outside parliament.
