Two events took place in Batticaloa on 28 January to remember victims of what has come to be called the Kokkadicholai massacre that happened 37 years ago.
Relatives and civil society activists attended one event at a memorial at Mailadithivu, where the names of the 230 people are engraved.
The other one organized by Tamil students of the Eastern University happened at its Pongu Thamil memorial.
Speaking at the Mailadithivu event, MP Govindan Karunakaram urged all Tamils to unite for a struggle for their freedom.
Three days of attacks by the military at Kokkadicholai from 29 January 1987 left scores killed and many others abducted.
The village again came under attack on 12 June 1991, in which 17 rice grinding mill workers were killed and around 400 damaged.
