The north and the east will observe 04 February as a ‘black day’ while the day will be marked elsewhere as the 76th anniversary of independence.

Relatives of missing persons and Jaffna university students separately made the declaration while noting that a lasting political solution is yet to be given for the Tamil people.

At a media briefing, student leader K. Thuvakaran said they would continue their struggle until such a solution is given.

Speaking to the media in Batticaloa, head of the association of missing persons Thambirasa Selvarani said they were yet to enjoy freedom despite 14 years of struggle.

The association will stage a protest on 04 February that will be representative of all eight districts in the two provinces.
