Civil society organizations launched an agitation on 26 January against an alleged attempt to wipe out Mannar Island from the Sri Lanka map via a multinational wind farm project.

Hundreds of placard-holding protestors marched from the main bridge to the town and handed a petition to additional district secretary M. Sri Skandakumar.

Already 36 windmills have been installed with plans for another 100, they said, noting that each occupies a 6.5 acre area.

This will lead to land as well as livelihood issues among the inhabitants.

Further, 5,000 acres of private land have been acquired by fraudulent means for the excavation of mineral sand, charged president of the Mannar citizens committee Fr. S. Marcus.
