Chairman of the UPFA Maithripala Sirisena has informed general secretary Thilanga Sumathipala and his challenger Mahinda Amaraweera to vacate from the position.

In doing so, Sirisena hopes to avoid any dispute arising with regard to the position when the UPFA’s name is used for forming a new alliance.

He replaced Amaraweera with Sumathipala as the general secretary after the former went against the party line and joined the government with a cabinet position.

Amaraweera has sought redress in courts, with the Elections Commission refusing the recognize either in the position.

Both Sumathipala and Amaraweera have now agreed to the appointment of a new general secretary.
