Police are investigating a social media post published by the driver of later state minister Sanath Nishantha.

The CID has taken custody of his mobile phone and also questioned him at Ragama Teaching Hospital.

Police media spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said he was aware of an investigation into a social media post by the driver that made references to ‘his death’.

In the meantime, questions have been raised over the arrest of the driver of the container truck to which the state minister’s jeep had rammed into.

Expressway traffic officials have made differing claims about the arrest.

One is that he was taken into custody over a road accident and the other is that he is to be tested to see if he had been under the influence of liquor at the time.

Traffic police sources say no arrest is made to test for drunk driving and that the driver in such an incident does not get arrested either, other than for reckless driving.

However, there is no evidence to support such a claim in this incident.

Courts have given bail to the container truck driver, while the jeep’s driver has been remanded until 05 February.

He is being treated at hospital under police guard.
