Talks are underway to form a Sri Lanka Freedom Party-led alliance with former presidents Chandrika Kumaratunga and Maithripala Sirisena tipped to be members of its leadership council.

The new alliance had initially been proposed under the banner of the UPFA, but an issue has arisen over its general secretary position.

Therefore, the ‘chair’ symbol of the PA is more likely to be used, said party sources.

Other than the SLFP, the MEP and the CPSL have already agreed to join this alliance.

New Alliance led by Nimal Lanza too, is likely to be a member.

A final decision on the new union is to be taken on 29 January.
