Sri Lankans staying in Tamil Nadu, South India on refugee visa now have the opportunity to own all-country Sri Lanka passports.
Until now, they had passports that restricted their travel between Sri Lanka and India.
The launch of the programme took place yesterday (19) at the Sri Lankan deputy high commission in Chennai, where 197 persons received their new passports.
The deputy high commission is implementing the programme in collaboration with Indian agencies on a concept by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Among those present on the occasion were Tamil Nadu Minister of Minorities and Nonresident Tamil Welfare K.S. Masthan, Sri Lankan High Commissioner Kshenuka Seneviratne and Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman.
National Security Advisor and Chief of Staff to the President Sagala Ratnayaka joined the event online.
