ITAK MP M.A. Sumanthiran has accused president Ranil Wickremesinghe of having gone against the nonaligned principles.

Sumanthiran is referring to the president’s decision to send a warship to the Red Sea.

Done without approval by parliament, that goes against principles of nonalignment, he said.

The MP warned the country could be discredited and would suffer consequences as a result.

Presently on a foreign visit, the president is expected to attend the 19th Non-Aligned Summit in Kampala, Uganda on 23 and 24 January.

About a fortnight about, he announced the Navy would send a vessel to Red Sea to protect cargo ships from Houthi rebels.

He said a two-week mission would cost around Rs. 250 million.

Navy media spokesman Gayan Wickramasuriya has told the media that a ship is kept ready to depart on a day yet to be determined.
