Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) is now charging the double of the stipulated 2.5 per cent social security levy, consumers complain.

It levied a five pc of the levy from the January bill without any prior notice, which is illegal, they said.

There are no provisions to a delayed levying of the social security levy without the payers being at fault, said taxation experts.

It is upto the institution to pay, if any shortcoming on its part delayed the tax’s charging, they noted.

After sending the January bill to consumers yesterday (06) morning, LECO sent a SMS message to them saying that the social security levy for November and December last year would be levied from the next bills.
