More than one million persons have so far been registered with a taxpayer identification number (TIN), said the Inland Revenue Department.
Senior commissioner of the department Keerthi Napana has told ‘Derana TV’ that only 437,547 had registered with the department by 01 January.
He said that around five million persons, or 20 per cent, are in the highest earners’ category that accounts for more than 60 pc of the earnings.
The first target is to identify them, from whom the real tax revenue could be earned, he said.
A TIN could be obtained by visiting the IRD or the nearest branch of the Department, or by applying online via www.ird.gov.lk
The government has made it compulsory for all aged over 18 years by 01 January 2024 to have a TIN.
Having a TIN does not mean one should pay taxes, with the tax threshold being an annual income of Rs. 1.2 million or more.
