Railway level crossing keepers in the northern and eastern provinces are staging a two-day strike to press for several demands.

Their action that started at 6.00 am today (04) coincides with a planned visit by president Ranil Wickremesinghe to the north.

Head of their association Rohan Rajkumar asked the public to be cautious near level crossings during their strike.

He told the media in Mullaitivu yesterday that they are paid a mere Rs. 250 a day and had to slave under police control.

They should be made permanent in their jobs, given a suitable salary and their control by the police should be removed, he said.

Rajkumar said they wanted the president to look into their grievances during his three-day visit to the north.
