An intelligence report received by the government has revealed details of around 2,000 politicians, police, prison and state officials who aid and abet the underworld.
The report says it will be difficult to curb activities of the underworld as long as it receives this protection.
It details nearly 30 instances where politicians had intervened for the releasing of arrested criminals.
Also, there are some underworld figures who are related to politicians and receive their protection.
Certain police and prison officers are paid monthly for their support.
In the meantime, more than 200 underworld members had fled the country - mostly to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and France - with the assistance of certain police officials and fishing boat owners.
With red alerts issued by the Interpol for some of them, public security minister Tiran Alles is taking up their possible deportation at diplomatic level.
