A group of Tamils led by TNPF MP Selvarasa Gajendran has staged a protest to demand land which they claim had been taken over by the Army to build a Buddhist temple in Kankesanthurai.

They carried out the agitation on 26 December on the road near Tissa Vihara at Thayyiti.

TNPF activist Nataraj Kandipan asked devotees to the temple to follow the teachings of Buddha and return the land to the Tamils for which they have title deeds.

The Army says in its website the temple built by King Devanampiyatissa dates back to third century A.D.

Protestors claimed it is located on a 6.2-acre land owned by 14 Tamil families.
