The USD 1 billion loan obtained at a 6.5 per cent high interest in 2012 by Mahinda Rajapaksa led to the country’s bankruptcy, alleged leader of the United Republic Front Patali Champika Ranawaka.
Repayment of that loan could not be completed before the due date of 26 July, 2022, he said.
It could easily have been obtained at a very low interest rate of 0.1 pc, said the MP.
Ranawaka was speaking at a party function at Kekunadura on 23 December.
He also ridiculed Rajapaksa for issuing statements about high taxes after supporting the passage of a budget that burdens people with more taxes.
