The Eastern University at Punani in Batticaloa is due to commence its academic activities on 18 January.
It has facilities for nearly 10,000 students and has so far received around 3,000 enrolment applications, said its chairman M.L.A.M. Hizbullah.
Its construction completed in 2018, and was used as a covid-19 quarantine centre before its handover to Hizbullah on 20 October, 2023.
Its activities began on 15 December amid religious observances with vice chancellor Prof. Jayantha Lal Ratnasekara in attendance.
