All 251 policemen and Sri Lanka Army soldiers deployed to protect the Mihintale sacred area will be withdrawn today, State Minister of Defence Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon told Parliament, the Sunday Times reported.

This follows a complaint by the Chief incumbent who said two soldiers who were not officially assigned were found.

He expressed doubts that may be a conspiracy to assassinate him.

But the State Minister denied the claim and said they were deployed for intelligence duties and that was not unusual.

Update:

No decision has been taken to withdraw any police officers deployed for the security of Mihintale sacred premises, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

Furthermore, SSP Thalduwa assured that Sri Lanka Police would continue to engage in duties at the premises accordingly.
