Police have allegedly obstructed a remembrance in Mullaitivu for 32 Tamil civilians murdered 39 years ago.

On 02 December, relatives were offering floral and other tributes to a memorial built in front of the rural development hall at Odiyamalai, the site of the killings, when police arrived.

Oddusudan OIC Ranjith Bamunusinghe said it was not an issue if they remembered their dead, but demanded to see a license for the use of loudspeakers.

With organizers promising to stop the use of loudspeakers within 10 minutes, police departed.

Relatives also held a Pooja at a nearby Kovil.

The killings at Odiyamalai are blamed on the military as one of a series of attacks targeting Tamil villages bordering Mullaitivu and Trincomalee districts in December 1984.

TULF MPs at the time alleged the aim was to settle the Sinhalese in the areas.
