Events to remember LTTE members who died in the war took place in the north yesterday (27).

‘Maaveerar Naal’ was celebrated despite partly-successful police attempts to obtain court orders, especially in the east, for a ban citing the proscription of the LTTE.

Such requests were turned down by Kayts, Jaffna, Kopay, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Mallakam magistrate’s courts.

At several instances, certain conditions were laid down, including against the use of LTTE flags and the word Maaveerar.

In the east, prohibition orders were given by the Batticaloa, Valachchena, Sampur and Muttur magistrates.

It is alleged the Army has bulldozed nearly 25 cemeteries where around 20,400 LTTE members are buried in the two provinces.
