A newly-erected memorial at an LTTE cemetery in Batticaloa has been dismantled on a court order.
Police and wildlife officers removed the construction at Tharavai in Valachchena a week after it was built on 18 November.
The magistrate ordered its removal after submissions were made that it was an unauthorized erection on a land owned by the wildlife department.
People of the area allege the department took over the burial site for LTTE members only after the end of the war.
On 23 November, police prevented a remembrance for dead LTTE members at Sandiveli junction Batticaloa, noting the LTTE was a proscribed organization.
Organizers distributed food parcels among families of the dead LTTEers as planned.
