Two separate requests by the police to ban remembrances for dead LTTE members have been rejected by the Mallakam magistrate’s court.

Citing the proscription of the LTTE, Thelippalai and Achchuveli police had made the requests on 20 November.

Magistrate Savitri Sailavan refused to issue such an order, saying remembrances that do not harm national security cannot be banned as remembering the dead was a human rights.

On the following day, weeklong events began at Jaffna University and a LTTE cemetery in Mullaitivu to mark Maaveerar day.

Tamils are finalizing arrangements at LTTE cemeteries for the remembrance on 27 November.

The Army is accused of bulldozing around 25 cemeteries where around 20,400 LTTE members are buried.
