The Constitutional Council (CC) is reportedly divided over the issue of a service extension for police chief C.D. Wickramaratne, reports said.
It met on 18 November, but a majority of the nine members refused to grant a further term for the IGP.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is its chairman, while the members are PM Dinesh Gunawardena, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Sagara Kariyawasam, Dr. Pratap Ramanujam, Dr. Dilkushi Anula Wijesundara, Dr. Dinesha Samararatne and MP Kabir Hashim.
One position remains vacant.
The three-week extension, the fourth granted to Wickramaratne by the president without CC’s approval, ends on 24 November.
