President Ranil Wickremesinghe said today (13) that he managed in the past year to bring Sri Lanka’s collapsed economy back on track.

Delivering his 2024 budget speech in parliament as the finance minister, he said people strived to support him in the task, but that there were some who tried to take the country backward.

He urged that falsehoods be not spread for political gain and sought honest commitment from all to place country before politics.

The president said taking this difficult but 100 per cent successful journey would help the economy to a better level very soon.

He promised to identify shortcomings and correct them with humility.

Attributing the achievements so far to his government’s economic reforms, president Wickremesinghe claimed the foundation has now been laid to prevent the country from falling back to an economic hell like in 2022.

He said tax concessions would be possible once state revenue is raised as proposed from the budget to address tax evasions etc.

The country’s victory is more important than election victory, he stressed.
