The Movement for a Just Society has spoken against the recently-imposed import levy on sugar.
The new tax benefits neither the government nor the people, but enabled a handful of powerful businesses to amass income, said its chairman Karu Jayasuriya in a statement.
Tax relief should be given to the people, and not the businesses that earn improperly, he said.
Jayasuriya added the government has a responsibility to ensure justice for the people in this matter.
