A Buddhist temple in Trincomalee has started functioning amid opposition by the area’s Tamils and without obtaining Pradeshiya Sabha approval demanded by authorities.

Mainly monks attended the placing of Buddha statues at Boralukanda Vihara at Iluppukulam in Nilaveli on 06 November.

Eastern province governor Senthil Thondaman ordered a halt to the construction of the temple following the opposition, but work continued uninterrupted.

At a district development committee meeting on 28 August, two monks threatened the governor, who insisted that PS approval was needed for the constructions.

Later, an Adikarana Sangha Nayaka, Polhengoda Uparatana Thera, spoke to the media and refuted the governor’s claim.
