A nine-year-old boy has allegedly been beaten by his English teacher with a stick at a school in Hatton.

Parents have complained to education and law enforcement authorities about the incident at No. 2 Tamil School at Kirkoswald estate in Bogawantalawa.

The fourth grader was admitted to hospital after the female teacher punished him thus for speaking to a friend during studies.

Police investigations revealed the boy was hit on his right hand and the upper back.

Following recommendations by the Human Rights Commission, the Education Ministry has issued specific guidelines to prevent physical punishment at schools.

Any violations could lead to court and disciplinary action on charges of cruelty against children and fundamental rights violations, said a ministry circular.
