With the aim of introducing digital or smart driving licenses, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) launched a project to issue driving licenses with a QR code replacing the existing semiconductor chips, DMT Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said.
He told the Daily Mirror that the printing process of this digital driving license had begun on October 16, after the Sri Lankan Army handed over the printing and issuing of the driving license back to the DMT.
The decision was taken to implement the digital driving license following Cabinet approval granted on October 11.
Due to the economic downfall, it was hard to import chip reading units. Therefore, it had been decided to print the QR code, replacing the semiconductor chip, to make it easier to read the information of the card holder.
A separate mobile application has been introduced to read information about the QR codes only for the DMT office and the Police Department.
The new smart driving license cards have included the demerit points system for traffic offenses. This system will be implemented after completing the issue of cards for at least half the requirements.
