An opportunity given to expatriate workers to import electric vehicles has been abused, the parliamentary ways and means committee has said.

The state has lost tax revenue from the import of 119 electric cars valued at nearly Rs. 1.2 billion.

A single importer had accounted for 75 of these vehicles.

Racketeers have sold the import licenses, worth 250,000 US dollars each, before the vehicles were imported.

Committee chairman Patali Champika Ranawaka has called for the enforcement of the law against the culprits.

He recommended to the Customs to evaluate the revenue lost to the state from this racket and to the labour, foreign employment and finance ministries to coordinate this import license.
