Three persons have been arrested in connection with the rape of a 15-year-old girl inside a bus at Kumbukgete in Kurunegala.

They are a youth who committed the crime and the driver and the conductor of the bus.

After school, the girl had boarded the bus to go home, but the suspects had reportedly taken her around one kilometre further from her destination with the bus empty of passengers.

Police said the two bus workers had closed the doors and window panes of the bus and aided the young man to abuse her sexually.

They had then allowed her to leave, and she had subsequently told one of her female teachers about the incident.

That led to the arrest of the suspects.

Police spokesman reveals girl’s identity

Police media spokesman Nihal Thalduwa has been criticized for revealing the identity of the rape victim during a media briefing.

President of Urban Citizens Shermila Gonawala told ‘The leader’ that by doing so, the police officer had violated the victims and witness protection act.

Gonawala charged the suspect youth’s father, an owner of several passenger buses, is influencing the police through a provincial governor.
