Justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said he was under pressure from no one when he submitted a cabinet bill for a change in the election system.

He was addressing a dialogue on the executive presidency and electoral reforms, organized by the National Movement for Social Justice at Sri Lanka Foundation in Colombo yesterday (16).

The minister said the bill was intended to deliver people’s aspirations in a more positive light.

According to him, the prime minister will chair talks with political parties next week on changing the election system.

The government is prepared to open doors for participatory democracy in bringing about such a change, added Rajapakshe.

Chairman of the Movement Karu Jayasuriya, MPs Prof. G.L. Peiris, Prof. Charitha Herath, Tissa Attanayake, Eran Wickramaratne and former election chief Mahinda Deshapriya were among the participants.
