Small-scale fishermen of Pallimunai in Mannar are on a protest against alleged harassment at the hands of the Fisheries Department.
Launching their agitation in front of the district secretariat on 12 October, they claimed severe inconveniences due to a license introduced specifically for small-scale fishermen.
The Navy has been given powers to arrest those without a license, they said.
Staging a sit-down protest at the gate to the building, they asked that they be given a solution, with one protestor saying there should be a common licensing system for all fishermen.
