Daily attendance will be made compulsory for all grades under new education reforms, said education minister Susil Premajayantha.

Even for grade five scholarship examination, marks will be given for attendance in the preceding years, he said at a function in Ayagama.

It is unfair to measure talent by the marks children obtain at that examination, since the cut-off mark is decided purely on the funds available for the scholarships in a year, he said.

Also, it is meaningless for students of popular schools to sit for the grade five scholarship exam, as it is held purely as an opportunity for entrance to popular schools.

Taking a swipe at the level of commercialization of education not seen elsewhere in the world, he said the entire sector including preschool education needs to be fully transformed.
