The Working Journalists Association of Sri Lanka filed a petition in the Supreme Court yesterday (03) against the online safety bill.

The association, its president Duminda Sampath, committee member Lasantha Ruhunage and treasurer T. Nadarasa have filed the case that cites the attorney general as the respondent.

Presidents’ counsel Jayampathy Wickramaratne appears on behalf of the petitioners.

Another petition challenges bill

The SJB and the collective of opposition parties have also gone to court against the bill.

SJB general secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Prof. G.L. Peiris and former Weligama mayor Rehan Jayawickrama are the petitioners.

Challenging the provisions proposed by the bill, the petitioners seek an order for a two-thirds majority passage by parliament as well as at a referendum for it to become law.
