UNP MP Wajira Abeywardena has called for an investigation by state intelligence against Central Bank governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and Finance Ministry secretary Mahinda Siriwardena.

He is accusing both of arbitrarily declaring Sri Lanka to be bankrupt and suspending foreign loan repayments.

Abeywardena was speaking at a meeting on 15 September of the parliamentary select committee that inquires into the country’s insolvency.

Here, ex-CBSL governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, MP S.B. Dissanayake as well as several Ranil Wickremesinghe loyalists sided with the UNP MP and spoke against Weerasinghe and Siriwardena.

The country had the ability to repay 3.1 billion US dollars of foreign borrowings due in 2022, out of a total debt of 70 billion USD, but bankruptcy was claimed on 12 April in that year, said Abeywardena.

His allegation comes at a time when the duo, led by president Wickremesinghe, is handling the ongoing economic reforms.

In the meantime, ex-finance minister Ravi Karunanayake too, has criticized certain actions of the CBSL governor.
