A protest has taken place in Trincomalee against a selective permission given to use illegal fishing nets in the eastern seas.

Around 500 Sinhala and Tamil fishermen gathered in front of the fisheries department office yesterday (13) and said the livelihood of around 1,000 families was now at risk.

They said 176 fishermen had been allowed to use the illegal nets known as ‘surukku’ that destroy small fish on a massive scale.

The use of illegal fishing nets remains an issue for more than 15 years.
