General secretary of Bodu Bala Sena Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera has alleged a plot on his life before the Easter Sunday terror attacks happened.

The Thera said a state minister in the government, Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, telephoned him and revealed details of the attempt, which he had come to know when he was in remand prison.

Chandrakanthan has previously made the claim while testifying before a commission that inquired into the terror attacks, but the media has failed to report it, he said.

An investigation into the claim by a CID officer named Gunasekara had made no headway.

According to the state minister, five men had arrived from the Maldives to kill the BBS leader.

The key conspirator had even planned to meet Gnanasara Thera in Vavuniya, but the meeting did not take place.

He had later been arrested in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks, The Thera said.

The extremist ideology nurtured in the name of Islam still remains, he added.
