Leader of the United Republican Party Patali Champika Ranawaka has decried modern day slavery in Sri Lanka.
Allowing a free reign for racketeers cannot help save the country amid a financial crisis, he also told a party event in Matale yesterday (03).
MP Ranawaka promised to usher in an era under a future regime, in which the talented could rise up to be national leaders irrespective of racial or religious differences.
Also, racketeers will be dealt with severely, he said.
Explaining his claim of slavery, he said estate women are being sold to Colombo and other cities.
The most recent notable instance in which one Raj Kumari was beaten to death at Welikada police is a telltale sign of modern day slavery, he said.
Ranawaka said his party would lay the groundwork to ensure that anyone with the capacity could go up the ladder to become even the country’s president.
Among the key participants at the event were party chairman Dr. Ajith Amarasinghe, national organizer Sumedha Ratnayake, deputy chairman Dr. Harsha Gamage, Karu Paranawithana, Theekshana Gammanpila and former minister Nandimitra Ekanayake.
