Maj. Gen. Sanjaya Wanasinghe is the likely successor to Army chief Lt. Gen. Vikum Liyanage when the latter completes his extended term on 31 December this year, government sources said.

Wanasinghe is due to retire on 13 October this year, but the president has already decided to grant him an extension and appoint him as the 25th commander of the Army.

There are no corruption or disciplinary accusations against Wanasinghe.

A colonel commandant of the artillery regiment, he is the eldest son of former Army chief Hamilton Wanasinghe.

If appointed to succeed Liyanage, it will be a world first that a country has had Army chiefs in both father and son.
