SLFP general secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara and three other party strongmen have sent a strongly-worded letter to their leader Maithripala Sirisena,
leveling seven serious accusations against him, said reliable SLFP sources.
They pointed out how the SLFP has become impotent due to the continuous arbitrary conduct of the leader.
Other signatories are senior vice presidents Shan Wijayalal de Silva, Angajan Ramanathan and Sarathi Dushmantha Mitrapala.
They are accusing Sirisena of having conspired to challenge Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom the SLFP named as its candidate at the 2014 presidential polls.
Maithripala is also accused of having formed a coalition government together with the UNP in 2015 to deny the main opposition role for the SLFP.
Leaving the SLFP to ruin without taking any disciplinary action against any of those who had broken away and formed the SLPP is another accusation against him.
Also, the traditional Catholic voters had distanced themselves from the SLFP after the party’s leader was blamed over the Easter Sunday attacks after he failed to act collectively by not convening the prime minister to the National Security Council.
Sirisena’s inaction as the SLFP leader at the 2019 presidential polls denied the party cabinet positions which it had been entitled to after the general election.
He has also allegedly made enemies of the nationalists and leftists, who were the SLFP’s traditional friends, by unleashing a verbal attack against leaders of an alliance of 39 MPs under the ‘helicopter’ symbol led by the SLFP on 11 January 2023.
Sirisena is also responsible for the SLFP’s identity crisis, said the letter.
It cannot be said if it represents the government or the opposition, after he reappointed to the central committee the SLFP MPs who had accepted ministerial positions and joined the government.
However, the CC only decided to recall the letter that suspended their party membership, alleged the letter.
