Crony capitalism has invaded the medicines field, just as patients die after taking low-quality medicines, charged opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

He met with health sector unions yesterday (21), where he accused the government, health minister, health secretary and the health ministry of conspiring to bring down the health service.

Rather than introducing amendments to suit the times, there are attempts to completely do away with the acts on medicines regulation and the medical council.

The aim is to allow a free reign for multinational companies to manipulate the medicines policy, he charged further.

Among the participants at the meeting were representatives of the Sri Lanka Association of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Sri Lanka Medical Association.
