The prevailing drought has destroyed agriculture minister Mahinda Amaraweera’s paddy land at Angunakolapelessa.
The two-acre plot had not been irrigated on time, as waters released from Samanala Wewa were yet to reach the area, said the minister.
He said the ruined crop would not be burnt, but would be used as cattle feed.
No rains for two months
Meanwhile, the Met Department forecasts there will be no rains for at least two months.
Its director (forecasts) Shiromani Jayawardena said the seasonal heavy rainfall could be expected only in October.
August is a month without rain, and the dry weather has intensified due to the El Nino effect, she said.
