A parliamentary affairs committee has discussed issues relating to the visually-impaired people at a meeting on 08 August.

Chaired by Patali Champika Ranawaka, it was attended by state officials and representatives of the visually-handicapped people.

Ranawaka is the leader of the United Republican Front that is the first party to release a braille-version of its manifesto, and promised at its handover to look into issues of this segment of society.

The meeting decided to resume the payment of allowances for the elderly and the physically-handicapped with effect from July.

The attention of the Central Bank was drawn to the issues of bank customers with visual impairments when they go to open accounts.

The Colombo municipal council has been instructed to handover a cost estimate within a week to repair the roof of the building which houses the association of the visually-impaired.
