Hindus are staging demonstrations since 07 August to demand the immediate halt of construction of a Buddhist temple at Kuchchaveli in Trincomalee.

Construction work of the temple began in 2017 at the foot of the Uchchipillair mountain in Periyakulam.

A year earlier, it was declared an archaeological area after treasure-hunters ravaged the place for reported Buddhist artifacts.

The Archaeology Department and a monk, Panamure Thilakawansa Thera, who is also a member of an archaeological task force appointed by Gotabaya Rajapaksa, are said to be behind the construction of the temple.
